Hunter Safety Classes

Learn more and register for a class by creating an account on the Michigan Event Manager Website. Check our calendar for field day dates.

All classes are posted on the calendar but registered through the State of Michigan’s system. If the class is not listed on the State’s website, the class is full or unavailable. Please check back regularly to see if there are openings due to cancelations.

The Hunter Safety Program at the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club began in the 1960’s before it was mandatory. There was only one class a year back then but it was well attended due to the number of parents that wanted their children to learn the way to handle firearms safely while hunting with their family. By the time Hunter Safety was required to get a first license in the 1970s, CR&G was there to meet the challenge holding classes twice a year by State certified instructors and a visit from a local Michigan Conservation Officer.

Chelsea Rod and Gun Club provides the classes free of charge and all of our instructors are volunteers. Classes are posted on the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) website. Book will be provided at the start of the class.

Please see our calendar for the class schedule. Classes are usually scheduled for the months of April, August, September, and October.

NOTE: IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND A CLASS YOU HAVE BEEN REGISTERED TO ATTEND, PLEASE CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION USING THE MI DNR EVENT MANAGER

Upon completion of the class, In order to be able to hunt in states other than Michigan, a certificate number must be obtained for your Hunter Safety certificate. Please go to this website to obtain the certificate number.
