History and Information on the Chelsea Rod & Gun's Hunter Safety Program.
The Hunter Safety Program at the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club began in the 1960's before it was mandatory. There was only one class a year back then but it was well attended due to the number of parents that wanted their children to learn the way to handle firearms safely while hunting with their family. By the time Hunter Safety was required to get a first license in the 1970s, CR&G was there to meet the challenge holding classes twice a year by State certified instructors and a visit from the local Conservation Officer, Craig Whales.
Today the Hunter Safety program at CR&G has expanded to meet the demands of the community and the surrounding area by coordinating registration with the Chelsea Community Education Dept. and the Stockbridge Community Ed. Dept. Although there is a small registration fee that community education charges, the CR&G provides the classes free of charge. There are 4 to 5 classes a year now with a staff of more than 12 State certified instructors. Classes are posted on the Dept. of Natural Resources website and advertised in the Spring and Fall Community Ed. flyers.
